Amethyst
We love using Amethyst in our jewellery because of its warm colours, its calm beauty and its soothing properties.
Amethyst is a stunning purple quartz crystal that has been a prized gem throughout the ages.
It was used by the Ancient Egyptians in amulets and jewellery, the Greeks believed it could prevent intoxication (its name stems from the Greek “amethystos”, meaning “not drunk”) and the Romans often carved intaglio portraits on it. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Amethyst was considered a symbol of royalty and was used to decorate crown jewels, including the British. It was also worn by members of the clergy as it stood for sobriety, piety, and healing.
Until the 18th century, Amethyst was considered one of the capital gemstones, together with diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds, until the discovery of large deposits in Brazil decreased its rarity and hence its value.
Tibetans consider Amethyst sacred to Buddha and use Amethyst prayer beads.
Amethyst is the birthstone for February and the gemstone for the 6th wedding anniversary.
Amethysts are found in Australia, Austria, Brazil, India, Siberia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, the USA and Zambia.
